Hi, I’m Michelle Gale, founder of Pronunciation Lab, and I’ve spent the last 19 years helping professionals across the globe reduce their accent anxiety, discover their authentic voice, and unlock their full career potential.
Every day, I work with individuals just like you—ambitious professionals striving to excel in their careers while feeling held back by their pronunciation or public speaking skills. Whether you’re an international student, a seasoned executive, or a native English speaker, I understand how pronunciation anxiety and self-doubt can stand in the way of achieving your goals.
The good news? You can overcome these barriers. With personalized pronunciation training and confidence-building workshops, you can transform your communication skills and step into the future you deserve.
Understanding Accent Anxiety
For many of my clients, the fear of speaking up—whether in a meeting, a presentation, or even casual conversations—stems from worries about their accent or pronunciation. They tell me stories of being misunderstood or judged, which leaves them reluctant to participate in professional discussions.
This is also true for Korean and Chinese speakers, as well as other international professionals, who often face unique pronunciation challenges - it's not your fault, perhaps your listener isn't as acquainted with your particular pronunciation patterns, leading to distraction. English’s complex vowel system, its tricky “th” sounds, and cadence differences between languages can create frustration and distraction, and unnecessary awkwardness in communication.
Here’s the thing: your accent is part of who you are, and it doesn’t need to disappear for you to be effective. The goal is not to erase your accent but to enhance clarity, fluency, and confidence so that your voice becomes a powerful tool for connection and leadership.
The First Step: Assessing Your Needs
At Pronunciation Lab, we start every journey with a personalized Accent Analysis. During this one-on-one session, we identify the specific sounds, intonations, and speech patterns that might be holding you back.
For example:
Korean speakers may struggle with distinguishing “r” and “l” sounds or the placement of stress in multi-syllabic words.
Chinese speakers often need guidance with tonal differences and mastering tricky English sounds like “th” or “v.”
Even native English speakers sometimes battle monotony in their speech or lack confidence when presenting ideas.
By understanding your unique challenges, we can craft a training plan that’s tailored to your needs.
Building Confidence Through Practice
Here’s a secret: confidence isn’t something you’re born with—it’s a skill you develop. And like any skill, it requires practice.
In our confidence-building workshops, we go beyond pronunciation drills. I work with you to develop techniques for overcoming public speaking anxiety and channeling your nerves into powerful presentations.
One of my favorite exercises involves visualization. Imagine walking into a room, speaking fluently, and watching heads nod as people understand and respect your ideas. Visualizing success before it happens can change how you approach communication.
Pronunciation Tips for Immediate Results
Here are a few quick tips to help you start improving your pronunciation today:
Master the "th" sound: Place your tongue gently between your teeth and blow air out (voiceless “th” as in “think”), or add voice (voiced “th” as in “this”).
Elongate vowels: In English, vowels are often longer than in other languages. Try saying “meet” and hold the “ee” sound slightly longer.
Stress the right syllables: Unlike many other languages, English often places emphasis on specific syllables. For example, say “pro-NUN-ciation,” not “pro-nun-ci-A-tion.”
Practice intonation: English uses rising and falling tones to convey meaning. Experiment with how your voice rises at the end of a question versus the steady tone of a statement.
Record yourself: Listening to your own speech is one of the fastest ways to identify areas for improvement.
